You see, when you want to cure yourself from Trichotillomania, there are two sites of the coin that come with this behavior? Two opposing feelings, right?
On the one hand, you may like doing it; I mean the feeling of pulling out hair in the moment itself. Here are the exact words from the person I spoke to this week:
“Rik, I just like the feeling of doing it. It helps me while I have to do challenging things. It sometimes feels as it is even part of me, of who I am.“
But I knew we were talking over the phone for a reason when she said that, so I had to ask her about that other feeling, that other site of the coin that I knew she would recognize too and was the reason for contacting me!
So I asked her “what about the feeling later on, when you are realizing the impact this has had, both physically and emotionally?
I knew it was I direct question, but I had to ask in order to help her. And this was her response:
“That’s what I hate Rik, that’s why I want to stop with it. But I feel sometimes trapped in those two opposing feelings. Can you please help me with this?“
And when she said that, I knew something beautiful was on the way to help her achieve what she wanted!
Why is this important for treatment of Trichotillomania?
What I am sharing here may seem obvious, but also very important for effective treatment of Trichotillomania. Why?
Imagine you have two people pulling you in a certain direction. One is pulling to the left, the other to the right?
As you can imagine, you would not get very far if you kept listening to both of them. You may ignore the first person for a while, but then the other person may become louder and bring you right back to where you started.
Or, in other words, it’s like wobbling on your two legs, and your just not sure where to go to, what direction, because staying where you are is kind of nice and then again it really isn’t, right?
This is one of the main reasons why people stay stuck in doing this behavior.
How do we help people escape this trap via Trichotillomania therapy?
